PepsiCo company and leading sparkling water brand SodaStream announced today a series of sustainability commitments, including initiatives to reduce packaging waste and reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
SodaStream enables consumers to avoid single-use plastic bottles with its reusable bottle-based at-home sparkling water system. The company estimates it will enable the avoidance of nearly 78 billion bottles by 2025, 11 billion more than its goal announced last year. SodaStream also announced that it will switch its flavor bottles to metal at the end of this year, targeting a further reduction of 200 million plastic bottles. “Our sparkling water makers are sustainable by essence; every SodaStream user saves up to thousands of single-use plastic bottles from ending up in waste. We are taking our commitment even further by introducing sparkling water makers made from sustainable material.”
The company also announced a new near-term goal to source 10% of its global plant’s total energy requirements with solar energy by 2022, representing a 5x increase over 2020 levels. The company stated that the new goal contributes to parent company PepsiCo’s goals to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
