Sustainable packaging solutions provider Ball Corporation announced today a broad set of new sustainability targets, including initiatives aimed at achieving net-zero by 2050 and transitioning to renewable electricity by 2030. The company also reported a commitment to drive toward a circular economy for aluminum beverage packaging.

Along with the new goals, Ball launched “Toward a Perfect Circle,” the company’s industry vision to significantly increase recycle rates for aluminum beverage packaging, which would result in significant environmental sustainability benefits. The strategy outlines a pathway for industry participants – including beverage brands, retailers, and aluminum beverage packaging manufacturers and their suppliers – to collaborate to push the recycling rate for aluminum cans, bottles and cups beyond 90%, from below 70% today, and to increase the global average recycled content rate to as much as 85%.

The company stated that it will also advocate for investment in infrastructure and technology to support a more effective and efficient recycling system in the regions where it operates.

John A. Hayes, Chairman, and CEO at Ball, said:

“Our customers are seeking low-carbon and truly circular packaging options as they work to fulfill net-zero targets and meet growing consumer demand for sustainable products. Infinitely recyclable aluminum cans, cups, and bottles are the solution. We look forward to further enhancing our products and developing an industry-wide circularity roadmap in collaboration with our partners.”

Additional ESG initiatives announced by Ball include the expansion of its disclosure of its diversity and inclusion and social programs to include specific 2025 goals for each of the company’s regions and businesses. The company announced a goal to convert 80% of its global beverage can volumes to its lightweight STARcan designs, and committed to ensure that all of its aluminum is purchased from certified sustainable sources

Hayes added:

“As a world-leading manufacturer of aluminum beverage packaging, Ball has a responsibility to our stakeholders and the planet to improve the environmental performance, social impact and economic returns of our business and take a leading role in driving industry-wide solutions to the climate crisis.”
