Electricity and natural gas provider Dominion Energy announced today a series of vehicle fleet-focused carbon reduction goals, including a commitment to only purchase vehicles powered by electricity or alternative fuels after 2030.
According to Dominion Energy, its new “Green Fleet” initiative will help the company achieve its net zero CO2 and methane emissions goals. Last year, the company announced a target to reach net zero emissions by 2050, along with interim commitments to reduce methane emissions by 65% by 2030 from 2010 levels, and 80% by 2040.
Diane Leopold, Dominion Energy’s Chief Operating Officer, said:
“Dominion Energy is proud to make these commitments to help lower our greenhouse gas footprint. Over the years we have made significant progress cutting carbon and methane emissions in our operations to help us reach our goal of net zero. But we wanted to go even further by slashing emissions from our vehicle fleets, too, while simultaneously developing the infrastructure needed to support EV charging access more broadly.”
Dominion’s fleet transformation commitments include targets to convert 75% of passenger vehicles to electric power by 2030, and to have 50% of work vehicles, such as full-size pickups, bucket trucks, forklifts and ATVs, converted to plug-ins, battery electric vehicles, or vehicles fueled by cleaner-burning alternatives by that time.
Additionally, the company announced plans to expand its infrastructure supporting EV charging and alternative fuels at local offices and other facilities.
Dominion’s new initiative comes as the move to electric and clean energy-powered vehicles in the U.S. gains momentum. Last week, President Biden signed an executive order mandating that zero emissions vehicles make up half of U.S. vehicle sales by 2030. Earlier this year, Dominion Energy joined a coalition of US utilities aiming to ensure that electric vehicle drivers have access to a seamless network of charging stations connecting major highway systems.
