Wireless technology company Qualcomm Incorporated announced today a series of long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals, including reductions in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% and scope 3 emissions by 25%, from a 2020 base year, and ultimately reaching net-zero global emissions for all three Scopes by 2040.

In addition to its new GHG reduction goals, Qualcomm announced a new commitment to the Business Ambition for 1.5 C. Led by the Science-Based target’s initiative (SBTi), Business Ambition for 1.5°C is a campaign that calls on companies to commit to set ambitious science-based emissions reduction targets in line with a 1.5°C future.

The company stated that its new targets supplement its existing 2025 reduction strategy, focused on transitioning to renewable energy via long-term Power Purchase Agreements, decarbonizing its operations, and using a minimal amount of Renewable Energy Credits, and carbon offsets for residual emissions. According to Qualcomm, the company is already working towards achieving its long-term goals by purchasing 100% renewable energy for its San Diego headquarters.

The new goals add to Qualcomm’s recently announced series of 2025 corporate responsibility targets, including goals to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% from global operations, reduce power consumption in its Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform products by 10% annually, increase the representation of women and underrepresented minorities in leadership, and inspire 1.5 million students and teachers through STEM initiatives.

Cristiano Amon, president, and chief executive officer, Qualcomm Incorporated, said:

“Our net-zero goal and commitment to SBTi reflects our belief that environmental sustainability is absolutely imperative, with significant social and economic benefits that require collective action and leadership from Qualcomm and other corporate citizens.”
