Renewable energy investor, developer and operator Low Carbon announced today a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with carbon removal project developer Deep Sky, enabling the company to power its first facility, Deep Sky Alpha, with 100% solar power.
UK-based Low Carbon invests in, develops, and operates solar, wind, energy storage, and energy from waste projects across the UK, Europe, and North America. The new PPA will provide Deep Sky with electricity from Low Carbon’s first project in Canada, Lethbridge 1.
Low Carbon’s Head of Power Management, Marco Verspuij, said:
“We are delighted to finalise this agreement with Deep Sky, enabling critical new renewable energy to support their landmark project. We expect that PPAs will continue to play a major role in helping drive the renewables revolution in the coming years as organisations explore innovative finance options that help reduce emissions from their energy usage and decarbonise the wider economy.”
Founded in 2022, Montreal-based Deep Sky was established as a technology-agnostic carbon removal project developer, with projects underway in Canada utilizing methodologies from Direct Air Capture (DAC) to Ocean carbon capture, and a goal to remove gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere and permanently store it underground.
Based in Alberta, the Deep Sky Alpha project will deploy multiple DAC technologies, which will be tested and optimized by the company prior to being deployed at commercial scale. The renewable energy-powered facility is anticipated to be operational in Spring 2025, using 10 technologies to capture CO2, which will be injected 2 km underground for permanent storage.
Deep Sky recently announced a $40 million grant commitment from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst aimed at supporting the construction of Deep Sky Alpha.
Under the new 10-year PPA, the project will be provided with 10 GWh annually from Low Carbon’s solar project, which the companies said will generate enough clean electricity to power 100% of Deep Sky Alpha’s operations.
Damien Steel, Deep Sky CEO, said:
“We’re proud to work with Low Carbon to generate 100% new renewable power for our first carbon removal facility, Deep Sky Alpha. Securing renewable power for novel carbon dioxide removal projects is incredibly difficult, and we couldn’t be more excited to have Low Carbon as our partner in Alberta.”
