Enhanced rock weathering startup Eion announced today a $33 million carbon removal purchase agreement through buyer coalition Frontier, with purchases by companies including Google, Shopify, JPMorgan Chase and H&M Group, among others.

Under the new transaction, Eion will remove more than 78,700 tons of CO2 between 2027 and 2030.

Founded in 2020, Eion uses enhanced rock weathering (ERW) to speed up Earth’s natural CO2 storage processes with the help of specialized rocks, by pulverizing the minerals and spreading them across farmland, where they effectively and permanently capture CO2. Eion’s process uses a mineral called olivine, which is crushed and delivered to farmers in the U.S. Midwest and South. The farmers apply the olivine to their fields as a replacement for agricultural lime, commonly used for managing soil acidity. As the olivine dissolves, it reacts with rainwater to lock up atmospheric CO2 as bicarbonate, which subsequently makes its way through groundwater for permanent storage in the ocean.

Key benefits to the technology highlighted by Frontier include providing a low-cost substitute to farmers for agricultural lime, and olivine’s fast-weathering properties, enabling it to remove CO2 faster than other ERW methods.

Eion added that it has partnered with agricultural cooperative Growmark, providing a pathway for expansion into new geographies.

Anastasia Pavlovic, CEO of Eion, said:

“Frontier’s offtake provides an opportunity to meaningfully scale enhanced rock weathering in the US. Via our partnership with Growmark, we’re excited to deliver tangible value to the farmers who are critical to achieving significant carbon removal while maintaining operational excellence on the farm.”

Eion also utilizes a direct measurement process to determine how much CO2 is removed in its process using deep soil sampling, enabling better understanding of the ERW process, including how atoms in dissolving rocks interact with water and soil particles on their journey through the soil column.

In a post announcing Google’s participation in the agreement, Reilly O’Hara, Program Manager, Carbon Removal Commercialization said:

“This deal isn’t just about removing CO2 – it’s also about building a robust, transparent understanding of enhanced weathering’s potential. By integrating with existing agricultural systems and prioritizing data sharing, Eion will help pave the way for scalable, impactful climate solutions.”

Launched in April 2022, Frontier is an advance market commitment to buy permanent carbon removal, aimed at accelerating the development of carbon removal technologies with guarantees of future demand. In addition to setting a demand pool for carbon removal, Frontier also vets suppliers, with a focus on solutions with the potential to achieve high volume and low cost.

Frontier said that it facilitated purchases on behalf of Frontier Founding Members Stripe, Google, and Shopify, as well as Autodesk, H&M Group, JPMorgan Chase, Workday, and Salesforce. Additionally, companies including Aledade, Canva, Match Group, Samsara, SKIMS, Skyscanner, Wise, and Zendesk have purchased via Watershed’s partnership with Frontier.

Hannah Bebbington, Head of Deployment at Frontier, said:

“Eion has two big advantages: olivine weathers fast and farmers can adopt it easily. This means they’ll deliver more carbon removal and more weathering data that can move the entire enhanced weathering field forward.”
