BlackRock-backed Skyborn Renewables and Amazon announced the signing of a 600 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for carbon-free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking the largest single PPA ever signed in Germany.
According to the companies, the new commitment will enable Skyborn Renewables to advance construction of the project, set to become Germany’s largest Baltic Sea wind farm, providing enough carbon-free electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German households annually.
Germany-based Skyborn Renewables is an offshore wind infrastructure platform, focused on the development, construction and operation of projects globally. The company was launched in 2022 by infrastructure investor Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) – now owned by BlackRock – following GIP’s acquisition of its predecessor company, wpd offshore, earlier that year.
According to Skyborn, Gennaker will become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. Located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the project will consist of 63 offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 15 MW each, adding add up to 976.5 MW of new offshore wind capacity to Germany’s electricity system.
Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer of Skyborn Renewables, said:
“As our blueprint project, Gennaker demonstrates how large-scale offshore wind can be delivered in a reliable, scalable way. It also reflects the growing need to connect renewable electricity generation with robust and forward-looking infrastructure that enables a resilient energy system.”
Construction on the new project is expected to begin following financial close in summer 2026, with the project scheduled to become operational by the end of 2028. The project will contribute to Germany’s target of reaching 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030 while enhancing energy security through increased renewable power generation in the Baltic Sea, the companies said.
Amazon was one of the largest corporate clean energy offtakers globally in 2025, according to BloombergNEF, contracting 10.22 GW of renewable energy capacity during the year. The company has invested in more than 700 renewable energy projects globally, representing more than 40 GW of carbon-free energy capacity.
Combined with existing projects, Amazon’s carbon-free energy portfolio in Germany now includes 12 projects with a total capacity of more than 1.3 GW. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to generate enough carbon-free energy to power the equivalent of more than 1.8 million German homes annually.
Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon Germany, Austria and Switzerland, said:
“By signing our largest power purchase agreement in Germany, we’re giving Skyborn the certainty to move forward with Gennaker, bringing nearly one gigawatt of new offshore wind capacity onto the grid, strengthening Germany’s energy security, and supporting jobs and investment in the region.”
