Spanish multinational energy company Iberdrola’s U.S. subsidiary Avangrid announced that it has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft, to provide the tch giant with electricity from its new 140 MW solar project in Washington.
The agreement marks the fourth U.S. renewable energy project under contract between Avangrid and Microsoft, which also include PPAs in Ohio and California, which both came on line in 2025, and a wind project in Washington, which is expected to begin commercial operation this year.
With the new agreement, the companies currently have more than 500 MW of energy capacity under contract in the U.S.
The new project, Bluebird Solar, located in Klickitat County, Washington, is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2028. Avangrid said that the project’s construction is anticipated to create approximately 300 jobs, and represents an investment of around $300 million in the community.
Microsoft announced recently that it reached a clean energy goal, achieving its target to match 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy. The company has also set a “100/100/0” vision, committing to have 100% of its electricity consumption, 100% percent of the time, matched by purchases from zero carbon energy sources by 2030.
Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda said:
“We are proud to have built a strong relationship with Microsoft to help them meet their energy needs while investing in the communities where we operate. This adds to Avangrid’s strong track record of developing projects to help meet growing energy demands from the world’s leading technology companies.”
