Ontario’s largest electricity provider Hydro One announced today a series of sustainability commitments, including targets to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and reduce emissions by 30% by 2030.

Mark Poweska, President and CEO, Hydro One, said:

“At Hydro One, we recognize the vital role we play in energizing life for Ontarians. As a transmission and distribution company, Hydro One is uniquely positioned to facilitate the transition towards a low-carbon economy. We are a sustainable company and we are taking action now to stand for people, the planet and communities and build a sustainable future for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Additional commitments announced by Hydro One today include plans to electrify its entire fleet of light-duty gasoline-powered vehicles to electric and hybrid models by 2030, and to improve diversity in the workplace by achieving 3.5% Black executive and board directors, 30% female executives and board members, and 5% Black student hires by 2025. The company also pledged to grow Indigenous procurement spend to 5% materials and services purchases by 2026, and to target at least 20% of corporate donations and sponsorships to Indigenous communities and initiatives.

Poweska added:

“As an organization, we have a responsibility to our customers and communities to push for positive change. We are contributing to a more sustainable Ontario by diversifying our talent, tackling the impacts of climate change on our business and recognizing the socio-economic capacity of Indigenous businesses.”
