Tech retailer Bes Buy announced today that it has joined the Breakthroughs 2030: Retail campaign, becoming a founding member in the initiative to drive climate action in the retail industry, and encourage other retailers to set carbon reduction plans aligned with achieving net-zero and limiting warming to 1.5°C.
Initially announced in July, the campaign forms part of the broader UNFCCC Race to Zero initiative aimed at rallying leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, and investors committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest, and to build momentum around the shift to a decarbonized economy.
Other founding members in the retail alliance include H&M Group, Ingka Group (IKEA), Kingfisher and Walmart. Retailers joining the Race to Zero effort commit to set science-based climate targets, work to halve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
At the COP26 conference this week, the campaign also launched the Race to Zero Retail Accelerator Pledge, targeting global, regional and national retail trade associations. The associations can become “Accelerators” by having at least 20% of their members joining Race to Zero. The campaign aims build climate momentum in the associations’ member bases, and to work with governments help shape the regulatory environment.
Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said:
“At a time when the climate crisis might seem too big to solve, we are proud to be a founding member of the Race to Zero retail campaign. Together, we will be able to make a meaningful and positive impact on the planet by joining forces and collectively rethinking how we do business.”
