U.S.-based supercenter and grocery retailer Meijer announced today a new sustainability target, committing to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 50% by 2025.
The new goal adds to the company’s sustainability program, which encompasses areas including food waste, sustainable packaging, and waste diversion. On the emissions front, Meijer has reduced emissions by 17% since 2014, despite opening new stores and distribution center facilities, equivalent to a 30% reduction in carbon emissions per square foot.
Rick Keyes, Meijer President & CEO, said:
“At Meijer, we believe in taking responsibility for the well-being of the world around us. We are reducing carbon emissions not only because it makes good business sense, but because it aligns with our values and mission of enriching lives in the communities we serve.”
To reach its new target, the company is planning to build on existing energy and fleet efficiency programs by adding more renewable energy procurement and piloting new innovative technologies, including energy-saving geothermal projects for refrigeration next year.
Erik Petrovskis, Director of EnvironmentalEnvironmental criteria consider how a company performs as a steward of nature. Compliance and Sustainability at Meijer, said:
“Lessening our impact on the environment through a continued commitment in reducing carbon emissions is an issue that is important to us and our customers. We’ve made significant progress over the years, but we look forward to continuing to do what is right for the world we live in.”
