Wireless network operator T-Mobile U.S. announced today that it has reached 100% renewable energy sourcing for its total electricity usage. The milestone achievement fulfills a commitment made by the company in 2018, despite the completion of the company’s merger with Sprint in 2020.
Mike Sievert, T-Mobile CEO, said:
“T-Mobile put a stake in the ground as the first telecom to commit to going all in on renewable energy by the end of 2021, and now we’re the first to hit this milestone years ahead of others. This was no easy task, but we set a goal and we achieved it. Today, thanks to amazing efforts from a team who was unwavering in our commitment to reduce our impact on the planet, the Un-carrier is powering America’s largest, fastest and most reliable 5G network with 100% clean electricity.”
The company outlined several of the initiatives that were undertaken in order to reach its goal, including entering into eight virtual power agreements and a Green Direct program, supporting wind and solar farms providing the company with approximately 3.4 million MWh of clean energy annually. T-Mobile also entered into 19 retail agreements, and it is supporting 37 community solar projects. Additionally, the company pursued a series of energy efficiency initiatives including switching to smart thermostats and ENERGY STAR certified LED lighting in retail stores, upgrading mechanical and electrical systems in data centers, and installing energy-efficient radio equipment on cell towers.
T-Mobile stated that it plans to add more renewable energy projects to its portfolio to match future electricity usage.
