Turkish Airlines announced today the launch of Co2mission, a new program enabling passengers to offset emissions from travel through carbon offsets. The company will also use the program to balance emissions from the business travel of its own employees.

Under the new program, passengers can choose a project from a portfolio of carbon offset programs on the company’s website, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, and forestation-related projects. Passengers can contribute with a chosen amount to a project portfolio of their choice, purchasing an UN-accredited emission reduction certification. The contributions will be used to support the projects accredited by Verified Carbon Standard and Gold Standard.

According to the airline, these projects also contribute to nine of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The THY Co2mission platform enables users to calculate the appropriate carbon offset amount using the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) methodology, which considers factors including route length, aircraft type, and fuel consumption.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee, said:

The projects supported by the carbon offset program will also show our heartfelt commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

The platform will be reachable through Turkish Airlines website during ticket purchases or directly through the Co2mission website.
