Automotive supplier BorgWarner announced today a new target to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by at least 25% by 2031, adding a value chain-focused goal to its existing climate commitments.
BorgWarner’s new Scope 3 target, follows the company’s recently announced commitment to achieve 85% absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reductions by 2030. In the company’s most recent sustainability report, BorgWarner said that its was moving forward with a project to calculate its Scope 3 emissions, in order to develop and submit a target to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). The company said that its Scope 1, 2 and 3 targets have now been formally submitted to SBTi for validation.
The company highlighted a series of focus areas aimed at helping it meet its new Scope 3 target, targeting emissions both from the downstream use of its products through the electrification of its product portfolio, as well as in its supply chain, by increasing content of recyclable and remanufactured material, product weight reductions, and sustainable raw material selection.
BorgWarner said that it will also ask its suppliers to develop a carbon-efficient supply base, and offer support to suppliers on their own emissions reduction journeys.
Frédéric Lissalde, President and CEO, BorgWarner Inc., said:
“We are excited to announce our science-based targets to further our vision of a clean, energy-efficient world. These targets are fully supported by BorgWarner leadership and encourage a whole-company effort to meet our objectives as we continue to support and collaborate with our partners to achieve sustainable operations, and, further, our value chain.”
