Digital solutions company Atos and chemical and materials giant BASF announced today a partnership aimed at launching a new solution enabling the chemical industry to assess the carbon footprint of chemical products.
The collaboration follows a commitment made last year by BASF to begin providing customers with the total values of CO2 emissions for all of its roughly 45,000 products to customers, utilizing a proprietary digital solution enabling it to calculate the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of each product.
Under the new partnership, BASF will provide its digital solution and methodology for calculating the PCF of chemical products, and Atos will develop a software platform based on this methodology to make the PCF calculation approach available to the industry.
Stephan Grötzner, Global Head of Chemicals & Process Industries at Atos, said:
“The chemical and process industry makes an important contribution in the fight against climate change. At the same time, the industry is confronted with various regulations. Together with our partner BASF, we want to help our customers better record and assess their product carbon footprints through uniform standard approaches and innovative technologies. We are proud to contribute our expertise in digital solutions for decarbonization to this target.”
Earlier this year, BASF announced a series of climate goals, including a target to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, and plans to invest up to €1 billion by 2025 to reach its goals. The company has announced a series of partnerships aimed at developing technologies to help decarbonize the chemical industry, including an agreement with chemical company SABIC and global industrial gases and engineering company Linde to develop and demonstrate solutions for electrically heated steam cracker furnaces, and a strategic partnership with Siemens Energy aimed at accelerating commercial implementation of new technologies designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions in chemical production.
Alessandro Pistillo, Director Digital Strategic Projects at BASF, said:
“Carbon transparency is a backbone for steering towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Our recently launched ecosystem of partnerships will accelerate the calculation, reporting and exchange of PCF data among actors along value chains. Atos is the first partner we are working with to make our digital solution and methodology available to other industry players including our suppliers and customers.”
