Global e-commerce company eBay announced today a series of new climate goals, including targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and value chain emissions, including transportation and distribution by 20% by 2030. The company also stated that its offices and data centers will become carbon neutral by the end of 2021.
eBay’s 2030 emission reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being in line with a 1.5°C global warming scenario. SBTi, a collaboration between CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), with the goal to establish science-based environmentalEnvironmental criteria consider how a company performs as a steward of nature. eBay outlined some of the key steps it has already taken towards achieving its climate goals, including reducing of overall energy use, moving electricity supply to renewable energy sources, reducted of water usage, and waste diversion. The company sourced 74% of its electricity supply from renewable energy in 2020, and earlier this year announced an agreement with Lightsource bp to source electricity from its Louisiana-based 345 megawatt solar project. eBay is aiming to power 100% of its operations with renewable energy by 2025. On the value chain front, eBay stated that it will work with its logistics providers to offer low-carbon alternatives.
