Focus will be on climate and sustainability engagements

HSBC Asset Management announced today that it has hired Christine Chow, appointing her as its new Head of Stewardship and Engagement, leading the firm’s responsible investing work around engagement with issuers and growing the firm’s research and insights in this area.

Chow takes over the role from Thomas O’Malley, who will become Head of Policy within HSBC AM’s Sustainability Office, which the firm launched earlier this year. O’Malley will be responsible for policy development related to sustainability and responsible investment.

According to HSBC AM, Chow will focus on climate and sustainability engagements that enable the transition to net-zero, and her role will be aligned with HSBC Group’s net zero strategy. The company said that she will also grow the engagement and stewardship team with additional hires in coming months.

Stuart Kirk, Global Head of Responsible Investing & Research, said:

“Christine’s appointment, as well as the imminent new hires, underlines the importance we place on engagement. Her extensive experience will allow us to build on the work we have done to date and enable us to be a leader when it comes to engagement topics in emerging markets.”

Chow joins HSBC AM after serving in senior ESG and asset management roles at firms including HIS Markit, where she served as Executive Director – Global Head of Strategic Governance and ESG Integration, and Federated Hermes, where she was Director – Global Tech Lead & Head of Asia & Global Emerging Markets. She has also served as a member of the Court and Investment Committee of the London School of Economics, and of the Data Governance Task Force of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group on artificial intelligence, and is currently a Board Member of the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN).

Chow said:

“With its presence in Asia and emerging markets, HSBC AM is in a unique position to help these economies to transition sustainably. I look forward to leading a world-class stewardship team focused on outcome-based engagements and to be a strong voice for change where it is needed.”
