Amsterdam-based global beer company Heineken has appointed former IKEA Head of Climate & Nature Simon Henzell-Thomas as its new Global Sustainability Director, responsible for leading sustainability at the company.
Henzell-Thomas joins the company after 14 years at IKEA, where he served as Head of Climate & Nature since 2022, following roles at the company including Head of Public Affairs & Advocacy, Head of Stakeholder Engagement & Human Rights and Head of Sustainability Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships. Prior to joining IKEA, he served as Head of Sustainability and Ethical Trade at The Body Shop.
Heineken recently updated its “Brew a Better World” sustainability strategy, which includes goals to reach net zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and across the value chain by 2040, reach 50% recycled content in bottles and cans, 99% of all packaging recyclable by design, and 100% sustainable sourced ingredients by 2030, as well as other 2030 goals targeting water usage, representation of women in leadership roles, and expansion of its range of low- and no alcohol drinks portfolio, among others.
In a LinkedIn post announcing the new appointment, Henzell-Thomas said:
“I’m very aware I’m joining a team that has been building and driving the agenda long before I arrived. My focus now is to listen, learn and support the work already underway.”
