Multinational chemicals company DuPont announced a series of new emissions reduction targets, including goals to achieve net zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.

The company said that its new 2050 and interim climate goals have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and follow the achievement of its previous SBTi-validated 2030 emissions-reduction target ahead of schedule.

DuPont’s new long-term goals include targets to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, from a 2019 base year, and Scope 3 emissions 90% by 2050, from a 2020 base year. Interim goals include to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 83% by 2035, from a 2019 base year, and absolute scope 3 emissions by 63% by 2035, from a 2020 base year.

DuPont’s prior 2030 goals, set in 2023, included targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% on a 2019 basis, and Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services and end-of-life of sold products by 25% on a 2020 basis. DuPont revealed that it reduced its combined Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 76% on a 2019 basis, and Scope 3 emissions by 59% on a 2020 basis.

Scott Collick, Chief Sustainability Officer at DuPont, said:

“SBTi validation reinforces the rigor we place on our climate commitments and the progress we’re making to reduce emissions across our operations and value chain. By advancing sustainable innovation, building more resilient operations and collaborating across our value chain, we can reduce our footprint while helping our customers advance their sustainability goals.”
