Natural beauty brand and retailer The Body Shop announced today a new commitment to have its entire product formulations portfolio be certified by The Vegan Society and carry its Vegan Trademark by 2023. The new goal aligns with the company’s belief that animals should not be harmed in the pursuit of beauty.
The Vegan Society certification involves thoroughly checking on every supplier and manufacturer of the 3,700 raw materials used by the company. Achieving the goal will require a significant expansion in The Body Shop’s vegan products, with only 60% currently vegan.
In addition to its new vegan commitment, The Body Shop also introduced a new waste reduction goal today, with the launch of a rollout of refill stations across 500 stores globally this year, and a further 300 stores in 2022. Additionally, the company aims to extend its in-store recycling scheme Return, Recycle and Repeat, across 800 stores, in 14 markets, by the end of 2021. The new initiatives follow the launch last year of a series of sustainability goals by The Body Shop’s parent company Natura, which includes a target to achieve packaging circularity by 2030, ensuring 100% of its packaging materials are either reusable, recyclable, or composable.
