HVAC and climate control solutions company Trane Technologies announced today a new environmentalEnvironmental criteria consider how a company performs as a steward of nature. More sustainability goal, aiming to cut its product carbon emissions in half by 2030. The company stated that its new targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
Buildings are a significant contributor to global GHG emissions, and one of the hardest to replace, given their long-term nature. According to Trane, buildings contribute to about 15 percent of global carbon emissions, and heating and cooling represents about 35 percent of that. Food wastage is another major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Mike Lamach, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Trane Technologies, said:
“As a climate innovator, we can make a significant contribution to solving climate change. Fifteen percent of the world’s carbon emissions come from heating and cooling buildings, and another 10% from global food loss. We are transforming our operations and revolutionizing the way the world heats and cools buildings and moves refrigerated goods.”
In 2019, Trane launched the Gigaton Challenge, a sustainability initiative aiming to reduce one billion metric tons of carbon emissions from its customers’ footprint by 2030, transforming the way the world heats and cools buildings, and refrigerates cargo in transport. Today’s announcement supports this goal, according to the company.
Trane stated that the SBTi validation makes the company one of only 47 globally to have its climate goals validate twice by the organization. Trane’s 2014 targets, which were also SBTi-verified, included 2020 goals to the reduce its refrigerant-related GHG footprint and the GHG footprint of its operations and to invest in product-related research and development to fund long-term GHG reductions. Trane’s goals are in line with supporting limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, SBTi’s most stringent category.
Lamach added:
“The SBTi-validation adds third-party credibility to our actions – we have real commitments, based on facts and data, that are externally validated and aligned with climate science. It will take a global response to address the growing climate emergency. We urge other companies to join us in taking bold actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and backing them up with science-based targets.
