Honda announced the launch of new environmental and safety goals today, including targets to achieve carbon neutrality across products and operations, and zero auto and motorcycle collision fatalities by 2050.

The goals were announced by Honda’s incoming CEO Toshihiro Mibe in his inaugural press conference. Mibe said that Honda sees the reduction of the company’s environmental impact and realization of safety advances to protect human lives as the two major challenges facing the company.

In order to achieve its new goals, the company outlined several initiatives that it will pursue, including the acceleration of accelerate electrification and clean energy efforts, and the application of connected safety technologies.

The company’s plans include targets to plan to make battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles represent 100% of its vehicle sales by 2040, progressing from sales of 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2035 in all major markets, including North America, China and Japan. The company said that it expects hydrogen to become more widely accepted as a renewable energy source, and aims to expand its lineup of fuel cell vehicles. Honda has also committed to supply its operations with 100% renewable energy.

On the safety front, Honda has committed to apply its omnidirectional ADAS to all new automobile models introduced in major markets by 2030, and to continue to strengthen its research on safety technologies that enable motorcycles and automobiles to safely coexist.

Mibe said:

“These are challenging targets, and to attain them, we must put forth a collective effort of our entire value chain. However, we decided to set high goals so that all of us share the vision of what we are trying to accomplish and take on challenges toward the realization of our goals.”
