Amazon’s cloud provider service, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of its AWS Sustainability console, a new service aimed at enabling users to track and measure the carbon footprint of their AWS cloud usage.
According to AWS, the new solution builds on the capabilities of the current Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT), launched by the company in 2022 as part of its Billing Console, adding features and capabilities, and opening up the ability to track the environmental impact of cloud usage to sustainability and reporting teams that don’t typically have access to cost and billing data.
Key features of the Sustainability console include the ability to measure estimated carbon emissions attributed to AWS usage, and to break down emissions by scope – including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions – as well as by region and by service. The console also includes a Reports page, enabling users to download preset monthly and annual carbon emissions reports calculated using both market-based (MBM) and location-based (LBM) methods.
Additional new features highlighted by AWS as part of the console include the ability to configure reporting to align with the users’ reporting period, as well as new API/SDK access that allows users to integrate the emissions data into existing reporting workflows and dashboards.
In a post announcing the launch of the new Sustainability console, Alexis Bateman, Head of Sustainability at AWS, said:
“By solving real customer pain points and building the right foundation, we’ve created an environment where we can continue iterating and delivering bar-raising experiences that help customers measure and reduce their environmental impact of their cloud usage.”
