Food and beverage giant Nestlé announced that its KitKat chocolate brand will achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, through efforts aimed at reducing the emissions impact of its ingredients, manufacturing, and distribution.

According to the company, the new commitment aligns with Nestlé’s goals to halve emissions by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050. In December 2020, the company released a detailed “time-bound” plan, outlining its approached and initiatives to achieve these goals. Increasing carbon neutral brands was one of the company’s key goals under the plan. Other focus areas include advancing regenerative agriculture by improving soil health and maintaining diverse ecosystems, planting hundreds of millions of trees, and transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2025.

Many of these focus areas are reflected in the company’s plans for KitKat. With most of the brand’s emissions coming from producing ingredients like cocoa and milk, the company will focus on initiatives like restoring forests and supporting a transition to regenerative agriculture.

On the renewable energy front, the company stated that KitKat is already using renewable electricity at some sites, and aims to transition to 100% renewables at all factories by the end of 2025.

KitKat aims to reduce emissions from sourcing ingredients, manufacturing and distribution by more than 50% by 2025. For any emissions that cannot be eliminated, the brand will invest in high quality offsetting based on natural climate solutions.
