Renewable energy-focused power producer and service provider EDF Renewables North America (EDFR) announced today a long-term solar-and-storage power purchase agreement (PPA) with Southern California’ Clean Power Alliance (CPA)
The PPA is for the Desert Quartzite Solar-plus-Storage project, consisting of a 300 megawatt solar project coupled with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). According to EDF, the project will provide enough electricity to power more than 163,000 California homes, avoiding 669,000 metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

By coupling the solar facility with an energy storage solution, the produced electricity during peak solar hours can be dispatched later in the day, creating a balance between electricity generation and demand. Energy storage is seen as one of the key building blocks for the rapidly expanding clean energy transition, given the intermittent generating nature of many sources of renewable energy, and the need to satisfy round the clock energy demand, while ensuring that energy is not wasted.
