CPR Asset Management (CPR AM), the thematic equities arm of the largest European asset manager Amundi, announced today that it will launch a new global thematic equity investment strategy targeting opportunities in the hydrogen ecosystem value chain.

Hydrogen is viewed as one of the key building blocks of the transition to a cleaner energy future, given its ability to act both as a clean energy carrier and fuel, as well as a CO2-neutral feedstock for the production of green chemicals. According to CPR AM, hydrogen is expected to represent 17% of energy demand by 2050. Significant investments in production, infrastructure, and deployment will be necessary in order to foster broad use of hydrogen for use in areas such as industrial production and transport.

The investment universe for the new strategy will cover the entire hydrogen ecosystem, from upstream production to downstream users such as automotive and rail industries, as well as storage and distribution. CPR AM stated that the theme will be managed in accordance with the EU’s SFDR Article 9 classification, indicating that the funds support sustainable investment.

Amundi and CPR AM are part of the Crédit Agricole group, which recently announced a commitment to intensify the mobilization its businesses and entities for the financing of the energy transition.

Vafa Ahmadi, Head of Global Thematic Equities and Managing Director at CPR AM, said:

“Hydrogen is an integral part of the solution to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and constitutes a true energy revolution. An ecosystem that is already investable is being set up and has significant growth potential. We are proud to be among the first on the market to invest in this theme of the future, and to do so through conviction-based management and an impact approach.”
